The high court asked the authorities to explain why security personnel were not able to stop the crime since the incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the Tihar jail complex
NEW DELHI: In a stark revelation of security lapses within the Tihar jail premises, the Delhi High Court sternly denounced the “unacceptable state of affairs” surrounding the brutal murder of 33-year-old gangster Sunil Baliyan, famously known as Tillu Tajpuriya, in his prison cell. Justice Jasmeet Singh, presiding over a petition filed by Tillu Tajpuriya’s father and brother seeking a CBI probe into the circumstances of the gangster’s death, expressed deep concern.
The court took decisive action, mandating the jail superintendent to personally appear before the bench on the next hearing date, scheduled for May 25. Additionally, Justice Singh directed the director general of prisons to submit a comprehensive report within a week, outlining the individuals responsible for the lapses leading to the shocking incident in the high-security Tihar jail.
Delving into the specifics, the court questioned how inmates managed to obtain knives, allegedly used in the fatal stabbing of Tillu Tajpuriya, and highlighted the apparent lack of intervention by security personnel. The entire incident, horrifyingly, was captured by CCTV cameras installed within the prison complex, prompting the need for a thorough examination of the security protocols in place.
Tillu Tajpuriya’s demise unfolded tragically as he was brutally attacked by four fellow inmates, purportedly associated with the criminal faction once led by his rival Jitender Gogi. Gogi had met a similar fate, being shot dead in a Rohini courtroom in September 2021 by Tillu’s gang. The court’s intervention underscores the urgency of addressing security vulnerabilities within correctional facilities and ensuring accountability for such egregious incidents.
